The mercerization process for Merino wool creates a "cashmere-like" feel and a "silk-like" look and changes how the fibers feel.

Mercerizing wool involves removing some of the structure from the surface of the wool fibers and thus creating a softer fiber that also has an increased gloss. The second part of the process involves applying a very fine, thin layer of silicone polymer that adheres permanently to the surface of the fibers.
